How to Get Perfect Concrete Sidewalks

If done correctly, concrete sidewalks could last 20 to 40 years.  However, there are many factors that can limit the lifespan of concrete.  Here are a few tips to getting the best product possible.

Tip #1 Hire a reputable concrete contractor.

Do your research.  Make sure you have an idea of what you want before you contact any contractors.  Look up several local concrete contractors and give them a call.  Pay attention to how long it takes them to respond to your call.  Get written estimates and compare “apples to apples” on several bids.  Call references and check on licensing and insurance.

Tip #2 Select an appropriate site

If you are lucky enough to be putting in new concrete sidewalks, you may have a choice of where you put them.  If, for example you are putting them throughout a business park, you may have the option of keeping them away from trees.  Tree roots are the enemy of concrete sidewalks!  If you choose to locate trees near the sidewalk, choose smaller trees or a deep rooted variety.  If you have to locate your concrete sidewalk near existing trees, know that you may have to repair the sidewalks periodically due to root lift.  Cutting the root that is lifting the concrete may damage the tree or make it less stable.  Your concrete contractor should be able to help you select the optimal path for your concrete sidewalk.

Tip #3 Know the process

Once you have chosen a concrete contractor, speak with them about the process.  Quality of construction is an important factor in the longevity of your concrete sidewalks.  There is such a thing as different strengths of concrete.  Make sure your concrete contractor is using the proper strength for your job.  Know what type of preparation of the sub grade your concrete contractor is planning to use.  Sometimes the concrete can be poured directly on your ground or you may require base fill and steel rebar installed in the slab.  To help minimize cracking, find out if there are any special curing instructions.  This can greatly depend on the weather at the time of pouring.  Last, but not least, ensure that there are proper control joints.  These should be 4 feet apart across the width of the sidewalk and about one quarter of the slab thickness.

When it’s time to get your concrete repaired there are several things you should know before making a decision on which company to call and use on your project.  The main reason this is so important is because most contractors will take any job they can get, especially in these trying times.  Although many will get the job done, what is really happening is you are paying someone else to hire the contractor.  When it comes to concrete contractors there are mainly four different types of concrete companies that you will find.  Knowing the difference between the four is crucial in not only getting the right job done, but also getting the best price.  Here is a breakdown of the four major concrete contractor types.

Industrial & commercial concrete contractors are pretty much the same thing.  They are the medium sized companies that are servicing the property management firms, general contractors and property owner types.  They are usually built to get large to small projects done quickly and at a more affordable cost than the bigger guys.  A typical commercial concrete contractor will be built to handle new construction projects as well as general concrete repairs.  Their focus is usually commercial in nature.  Their projects usually consist of business parks, churches, shopping centers, etc.  A good commercial concrete contractor will have a long list of professional references to supply you with so ask for a few.

#3 Residential Concrete Contractors

Most people who are looking to hire a contractor start with the yellow pages or the internet.  Often times it can be hard to tell the difference between two concrete contractors and their advertisements.  I am going to give you a hint, though. When you look at their list of services they offer, look at the order they are positioned in.  In most cases you will find that they place them in the order of importance to them. Contractors that show you pictures of residential jobs and then say they can handle a tilt up probably cannot. What they are doing instead is contracting work out to the proper contractor.  Another suggestion would be to consider asking the concrete contractors you are looking to hire for current reference (at least the last 20 days) of the exact work you’re looking to get done.  Try to get at least 2 references and ask their customers if you can go see the work that was done. At most, it will take you around 30 minutes to see them.  Remember, that 30 minutes can save you countless hours when hiring the wrong concrete contractor on your next job.

Here is an unfortunate scenario that happens all too often these days.  You open the mail and find that you’re being sued by an attorney for ADA violations.  Now, if you haven’t figured it out, most times (99.999%) these ADA lawsuits are just a load of garbage, but garbage you actually have to take out. This isn’t to say that some ada lawsuits are valid because some are. Big Golf Course Needs Concrete

Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was hired to do some concrete construction at the Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California.  Newport Beach is located in South Orange County near the cities of Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Laguna Beach.  This was a small, but important, job that included demolition and concrete construction.  Big Canyon Country Club is one of the most exclusive country clubs in Southern California and is often frequented by celebrities.  The standards set by Big Canyon are very high and only the best concrete contractor would be acceptable.  Bernardo Concrete, Inc. is that contractor.  BCI is always professional and they run a very clean operation, but don’t let their professionalism make you think that their prices are out of your range.  BCI’s prices are always competitive and fair.

About the Concrete Repair Project

This particular job may seem small and simple, but Bernardo Concrete, Inc. has the experience to know how to avoid the mistakes other concrete contractors may make.  Even when the scope of work seems small, BCI gives the same consideration and attention to detail that they would a larger job.  In this case, BCI was contracted to remove paving stones that were just outside a doorway.  The paving stones were attractive, but the rains had proven that they weren’t providing adequate drainage and the dirt between the paving stones was making mud puddles.  Because this was a small area very close to the building, BCI actually had to be very careful and precise.  The paving stones were removed and the area was taken down 4 inches in preparation for a new concrete walkway.  Much of the work was done by hand with wheelbarrows and special care was taken to tape plastic around the work area to protect the building.  BCI was also very careful to lay down plywood, so as not to track mud throughout the rest of the property.  BCI is a very conscientious concrete contractor and they leave the job site as neat, if not neater, than when they arrived.

Flip This Concrete Contractor

Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was contacted by a production company to work on a local production of A & E’s “Flip This House.”  The project took place in the city of Costa Mesa in Southern Orange County.  Costa Mesa is surrounded by the cities of Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Irvine, and El Toro.  The scope of work included in this project included concrete demolition and concrete construction.  Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was the perfect concrete contractor for the job!

The concept behind the show “Flip This House” is that a house is purchased, fixed up, and then sold for a profit.  Many contractors put in their expertise to help make the house and surrounding property profitable and Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was the concrete contractor chosen for this particular house.  Their part of this project included the demolition and removal of any concrete on the front of the property, including the driveway, sidewalk, and curb.  They also removed the front lawn, giving the landscapers a blank canvas with which to work.

This weekend Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was asked to perform some ADA upgrades in the city of Rancho Cucamonga. Rancho Cucamonga is located in San Bernardino County.  It is surrounded by the cities of Fontana, Ontario, Upland, and Claremont.  This project was performed in a busy business park, so, it had to be done on the weekend. The first thing Bernardo Concrete had to do was to lay out the new ramp and crosswalk in preparation for the saw cutter. The existing ramp and crosswalk was made from concrete pavers and were a beautiful addition to this business park. Unfortunately, they did not meet the ADA codes and some of them had to be removed.  Once the existing pavers were removed, Bernardo Concrete, Inc. created wooden forms and poured new concrete.  We paid special attention to making sure the grading and truncated domes were ADA compliant and safe.  BCI is a concrete contractor that knows the ADA codes and regulations.

ADA concrete project Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.

Curb, Gutter, & Slabs Removed & Replace in Pico Rivera Ca.

This week Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was asked to work in Pico Rivera.  If you’re not familiar with Pico Rivera, it’s a great little city located in Los Angeles County that has been there since the mid 1950’s.  Pico Rivera is located in between Montebello and Norwalk to the north and south, as well as Whittier and Bell Gardens to the east and west.  This project was located in a commerce center in Pico and the customer needed a few things done.  First off, there was the need for some concrete demolition of approximately 138 feet of curb and gutter, as well as further concrete removal of 100 feet of concrete slab.  Once that was removed, we needed to pour the new concrete curb and gutter, as well as the new concrete slab.  In whole, the job took only one day, but we took our time and it came out great!

About this Concrete Demolition & New Construction Project

This project was about as straight forward as they go.  We arrived at 5 am on site to begin the concrete demolition.  We worked for about 3 hours on removing the old concrete on both the curb and gutter, as well as the slab that needed to be repaired. The reason for the repairs was because of some tree roots that grew out and eventually buckled the concrete curbs and slab.  After the concrete curbs, gutter, and slabs were removed, we started forming for the new concrete.  Forming only took about an hour.  Then, we poured the concrete in and finished it using the appropriate floats and finishing tools.

Laguna Niguel Park Gets New Sidewalks Installed

Today, Bernardo Concrete, Inc. worked in Bear Brand Park located in the city of Laguna Niguel.  This is a beautiful city located off the 5 freeway & Crown Valley.  Laguna Niguel is surrounded by some of the nicest beach communities in Southern California including Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Aliso Viejo, and Laguna Beach.  This time around we actually worked on Bear Brand Park directly for the city of Laguna Niguel.  The city needed to hire a concrete contractor to install 1600 square feet of new concrete sidewalks adjacent to one of their many baseball fields where the kids in the park play.

Sidewalk installation is a common procedure for Bernardo Concrete, but these curbs got a little more polish on them than the day to day ones.  For starters, they were rebar reinforced for strength.  Also, they got shined edges and standard broomed finish.  Plus, we used foam padding for joint expansion.  Those are just a few of the professional steps many concrete contractors skip to save a few bucks at their customer’s expense, but not Bernardo.  We know that the city of Laguna Niguel had many choices on which concrete contractors to use and were glad they chose us.
