When our customer called us this week to get some work done, they told us that they needed some broken concrete  removed and some new concrete poured back.  We gave them a price and they asked us to schedule it.  On this project, our customers basically needed some concrete removed and poured back new again.  We like to call that R & R, remove and replace.  They had a concrete driveway and over time some cracking appeared from what looked like soil erosion.  Concrete Demolition is one of Bernardo Concretes specialties.

About working on Ontario

We arrived at 9:00 am on  Sunday morning and got the equipment unloaded.  We needed to break out the old concrete so we sawcut out the area to make a clean edge to the area being repaired.  Many concrete contractors don’t do this part of the process because they want to save some money.  After saw cutting the concrete out we used our bobcats to load the broken concrete in to our dump trucks and haul it off to the dump.  After the old concrete is removed we had to stabilize the soil underneath it so that the concrete had a solid surface to support it’s weight.  The way this is achieved is by removing the old wet soil and replacing it with a rock base filler. Once this is in place we where ready to pour in the new concrete and finish it to match the existing concrete surface.

This week Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was hired by a Los Angeles based property management company to get their sidewalks fixed in Commerce, California. Commerce is located in Los Angeles, California and is surrounded by the cities of Vernon, Maywood, and Bell. The concrete sidewalks needed to be repaired because of tree root damage throughout the business park. Tree roots are a major cause of concrete sidewalks cracking and breaking. After agreeing on a price, Bernardo was scheduled to show up and get the concrete sidewalks fixed. Concrete construction is what Bernardo Concrete does best!

It’s important to mention our process because we feel strongly that it’s what sets us apart from most of our competitors. Our process always begins the same way and that’s at our customers convenience. In this case our customers asked us to arrive on a weekend in the early am to avoid working around tenants and pedestrians. We showed up at 6 am and started staging our equipment. Once that was finished, we started to get the area prepped for concrete demolition. Areas that are going to be repaired are saw cut ahead of time.  By doing this, we minimize the ability to see the transition from old concrete to new concrete.  We have in-house concrete cutting equipment and operators, which allows us to stay competitive throughout the project. Our concrete cutter cut all the affected areas out and had the concrete cutting portion done in less than an hour. After the concrete was cut, we brought in our team of bobcat operators who use breakers and buckets to break the concrete down to manageable pieces, scoop them up, and load them into the dump truck that is standing by. Another hour and a half later the old broken concrete was completely removed and on its way to the dump. Concrete breaking and hauling is just one more service that Bernardo Concrete offers at a competitive price. The demo’d areas were now ready to be formed and poured with new concrete. All in all the project took just one day and came out great.

Seal Beach Property Manager Needs New Concrete Sidewalks

The Breakdown of This Concrete Sidewalk Construction Project

We arrived at the concrete sidewalk repair project in the morning at about 8:00 am.  Our customer was there to meet us and ask a few simple questions.  We used our blowers to clean off the area where the concrete demolition and construction would be performed.  We quickly tore out the old concrete sidewalks and re bar and hauled it away to a local landfill. Once the area was cleaned out, we constructed some pedestrian ramps for customers to use to access the stores. We formed out the sidewalks and the concrete material trucks arrived on the scene. 2 hours later all the concrete was pumped into the formed out areas and was quickly finished.

Garden Grove MHP Gets Flow Line Repair

The purpose of flow lines is to direct water off roads and parking lots during rain, cleaning, and watering of surrounding foliage.  The concrete flow lines that run throughout the park were in bad shape.  The recent rains only helped reinforce the knowledge that the flow lines were no longer performing as they should and needed to be repaired.  When proper drainage is not maintained, water can pool in places it shouldn’t and cause additional damage to the surrounding asphalt, concrete, and even structures.

Concrete Contracting and Demolition In LA

Bernardo Concrete recently completed a concrete demolition /concrete contracting project in Los Angeles, California.  In order to get this project done correctly , there were a few simple issues to consider.

1. Timing: This job had to be done early to avoid auto traffic and pedestrians.  Bernardo showed up at 5 am before people started to show up to work.  Once we arrived, we had to barricade off the area we would be working in.  Timing is critical on these projects.  Get in fast and get out fast.
2. Man Power: On a project like this it is critical that we schedule the right size crew to get the job done fast.  Make no mistake, fast dose not mean sloppy or cheap.  It simply means that we need to hit it hard and bust it out quickly.
3. Pre-Planning Project: When starting this job, it was also critical that we talk to both the foreman on the project as well as the salesman.  The idea is that the more communication that happens before the project, the fewer problems we run into during the project.  This project was a major business center in Los Angeles with dozens of large business that needed us to be in and out quickly so that their day wouldn’t be interrupted.

Concrete Demolition & Forming Begins

The first thing we had to do on this project once we arrived was concrete demolition.  We needed to remove the problem, which was basically tree root growth that caused the concrete curb and gutters to buckle.  On these types of projects its critical to remove the root that causes the buckle, as well as the concrete itself.  After the demolition was completed, we stated our forming process.  It was a pretty straight forward project in that forming new curb and gutter only took about an hour.   While we were there, we also did a small concrete pad for the customer.  This was a 10 x10 concrete pad that they needed us to install in a new area.  So, this area was formed out as well.

Pour, Finish and Clean up

Once the forming was installed, we moved on to pouring and finishing.  The trucks arrived with the concrete and  we poured the curbs, as well as the pad.  The areas were finished and cleaned up and came out looking great.  The customer was very pleased and the project was a success….. again.

This week Bernardo Concrete, Inc. was asked to work in Pico Rivera.  If you’re not familiar with Pico Rivera, it’s a great little city located in Los Angeles County that has been there since the mid 1950’s.  Pico Rivera is located in between Montebello and Norwalk to the north and south, as well as Whittier and Bell Gardens to the east and west.  This project was located in a commerce center in Pico and the customer needed a few things done.  First off, there was the need for some concrete demolition of approximately 138 feet of curb and gutter, as well as further concrete removal of 100 feet of concrete slab.  Once that was removed, we needed to pour the new concrete curb and gutter, as well as the new concrete slab.  In whole, the job took only one day, but we took our time and it came out great!

About this Concrete Demolition & New Construction Project

This project was about as straight forward as they go.  We arrived at 5 am on site to begin the concrete demolition.  We worked for about 3 hours on removing the old concrete on both the curb and gutter, as well as the slab that needed to be repaired. The reason for the repairs was because of some tree roots that grew out and eventually buckled the concrete curbs and slab.  After the concrete curbs, gutter, and slabs were removed, we started forming for the new concrete.  Forming only took about an hour.  Then, we poured the concrete in and finished it using the appropriate floats and finishing tools.

Once those precautions were taken, Bernardo Concrete was ready to start the concrete demolition process. The first step in that process was breaking out the existing, damaged concrete using our state of the art equipment, including Bobcat breakers. Next, we load the concrete into one of our waiting ten wheeler dump trucks. These dump trucks haul the concrete to the recycle plant, where it will be crushed and reused as rock base in another project.

After all of the concrete removal was completed, Bernardo formed and poured the new, stamped concrete, but that’s another blog.
